Since we’re on a Hryts theme… take a look at this rushnyk also from Central Ukraine…
I think:
How my heart is beating,
My Hryts has set off for China (!)
Perhaps he will not return!
I’m guessing “China” stands in for ” far away- who knows where”? Maybe it’s also from a song?

Olga Klymenko Можливо він пішов на російсько- японську війну або в Манчжурю.
Yuri Mischenko Китай is not China – it is an Island in the Syvash bay of the Azov sea, it was a summer pasturing area for sheep herders from southern Ukraine 🙂

Lilianna Juhasz Then why does the man carry what looks lika long gun? And why do we all use Kytai when we refer to China?

Yuri Mischenko Why do you think it is a gun?
Franklin Sciacca I wonder… if he is a sheep herder, why would he “possibly not return”?
Lilianna Juhasz Same thought crossed my mind. Maybe she was afraid he had a thing for sheep..
Lilianna Juhasz Yuri Mischenko. What else could it be? He already has a palychka that could do double duty.
Yuri Mischenko Franklin Sciacca : it used to be a very dry and remote area surrounded by salt swamps, with scarce drinking water wells.
Yuri Mischenko I cannot reasonably guess about the second stick. It could be a anything, including a a second stick or a hunting gun to deter wolves. Most likely – just a fantasy of the embroider 🙂
Franklin Sciacca I just googled “Гриць до Китая” and found this…

Yuri Mischenko This is just a piece of Russian propaganda 🙂
Lilianna Juhasz But there was the Russo-Sino war and then a repeat a,few, years later.
Yuri Mischenko Sorry, I see no connection. Ukrainian folk art doesn’t normally reacts to the political events, especially to the Russian ones.
Lilianna Juhasz Unless the Rushnyk was embroidered by someone who was in that part of Ukraine which was part of Imperial Russia, in which case, the men would be conscripted into the Russian Imperial army and would have to serve where sent.

Lilianna Juhasz Notice the way the two figures are dressed. It appears more Eastern Ukrainian. That was part of the Russian Empire.
Yuri Mischenko Lilianna Juhasz : Whatever makes you happy 🙂
Olga Klymenko Guys, it is obviously a rushnyk embroidered in Ukraine which was part of the Russian Empire around the time of the Russian-Japanese war. Ukrainians as imperial subjects were army conscripts. Have you heard of Port Arthur (which is currently part of China)? It is not entirely improbable that that is exactly what the story is about.
