Franklin Sciacca‎Ukrainian Folk Art & Traditions 24 липня 2017 р. ·I just acquired this rushnyk (from Poltavshchyna) with a very unusual inscription. Am I translating it correctly? It conveys a curious message that I’m not sure I understand!

MY STRENGTH [LIFE FORCE?] HAS GROWN COLD
[MY] BLOOD BEGAN TO SEETHE(?) IN [MY] CHEST.

Lilianna Juhasz A rushnyk was often used to lower a casket into the grave. Sometimes also used to cover a casket.

Chris Ulan I can’t say anything about the rushnyk and its use but it looks personalized with the big letters within the wreaths. “T” “M” in a cursive style. I wonder if this was a practice in some areas to prepare for one’s death, in the same way as a young girl might embroider her rushnyk for marriage. It is possible I imagine, that if a death was expected in the near future (not so near…there is a lot of work here) that there was time to embroider such a piece. I can become very creative and say that it was a piece that was embroidered after the loss of her lover. I get that sense from the words. I just read the following comments…I may not be that creative at all! 🙄

Franklin Sciacca Chris Ulan it is perplexing! I have a number of other rushnyky with similar image of the cross and grave and variant inscriptions, so it seems it was not atypical type of rushnyk in central Ukraine. The depictions of the cross are identical, so there must have been a pattern available for women to copy. Also found this article…but without a dictionary it’s hard for me to make out what is being said…

Chris Ulan There is much to read in the article. I am sure someone more capable than me will give you more detail. It appears to be a sermon given by a “pastor” as he refers to himself that way on Velykden’ (Easter Sunday) (I don’t think an Orthodox priest would refer to himself that way, especially in writing.) I have never heard the expression empty cross (порожній хрест) but I assume it means a cross without the image of Christ on it. That seems to be the focus of the article.

Natalie Kononenko This was a special rushnyk embroidered for soldiers who died in battle, esp. soldiers whose body was not returned home. The sister of the deceased was supposed to make one of these “death” rushnyky and it was “buried” in the skrynia in the home – it was not put on display. This act was supposed to help the young person who died before his time to rest in peace.

I stopped because various idiots started posting all sorts of inappropriate stuff – like sexually explicit messages.
